Local Law Enforcement
Roughly fifty automobiles have been smeared with what seems to be human blood in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.
Automobiles, exterior walls and postboxes were defaced, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they announced in a statement.
Police report they were alerted during the night on Wednesday night, when a man noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored substance.
The fluid had been applied in the pattern of a banned symbol, they added.
Officers then found numerous other vandalized cars and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under legislation prohibiting the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.
Law enforcement say initial examinations show the liquid was likely human bodily fluid.
"At present there remains no lead as to its source; investigators are presently not cognizant of any physical harm in relation with the occurrence," they commented.
Local authorities stated they were trying "to resolve the mystery" and have appealed to the residents for tips.
A senior official stated the incident left him speechless and had to be resolved rapidly.
"This act affects the center of Hanau and revives the trauma of the right-wing violent incident five years ago," he stated on online, recalling the murder of nine people by a assailant targeting residents of foreign heritage in five years prior.
