Resurgent Daniil Medvedev Secures Maiden Trophy in Over Two Years
19 of Daniil Medvedev's 21 titles have been won on hard surfaces
A revitalized Daniil Medvedev won his maiden championship for over two years with a win over Frenchman Moutet in the tournament final.
Medvedev, a ex- top-ranked player, has experienced a challenging season, managing just one match at the big events and experiencing a difficult moment at the American major.
His varied form on the professional circuit - and struggles with his service game in particular - resulted in him dropping out of the world's top 10 and eventually parting ways with long-time trainer Gilles Cervara.
Now training with Thomas Johansson and Goetzke, the tennis star has gradually progressed in the last few weeks - climaxing in a closely contested three-set triumph over opponent Moutet.
This marks the player's initial trophy since the 2023 Rome Masters and first on a hard surface from spring of 2023.
The win also means the Russian has achieved twenty-one titles at twenty-one different competitions.
"It's the first time I'm at a event with my children at once, so to win a championship is really nice," stated world number 14 Medvedev.
"This championship is in dedication of my child Victoria, because the maiden victory I got when my child her name was delivered was for her."
Medvedev, the past champion, had been defeated in his past six championship matches, including in that event previously this season.
The player's counter-punching strategy and regular outbursts on the playing surface had led some to wonder if his ability to play at the elite level was finished.
Yet the athlete has made changes in recent weeks, striving to advance forward and perform aggressively, backed up by an better serving game.
The champion recovered from a deficit in the first set against the challenging Frenchman, winning four of the final five exchanges to go ahead.
Both players traded breaks in the following set before the Frenchman, striving for his maiden tour victory, seized the initiative to create a third set.
The opponent saved four early-game opportunities in a competitive deciding set before the Russian broke to 15 to serve for the match.
Suitably, he earned victory with a point at the front of the court, with the Frenchman failing to handle a return after a lengthy match.
