The city's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to make his home in the iconic Gracie Mansion, vacating the rent-stabilised apartment that became a focal point during his campaign.

An Iconic Home

Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the primary dwelling for the majority of New York City mayors from the mid-20th century.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a key issue, was not quick to announce his residency plans promptly following his electoral win in November.

"This decision rested on the security of my family and the need to directing all of my focus on enacting the platform on affordability New Yorkers voted for," Mamdani said in his announcement.

A Fond Farewell

He resided in Astoria, Queens, a community famous for its abundance of immigrant populations and international dining.

"To the people of Astoria: many thanks for exemplifying the true spirit of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.

"Although my address will change in the neighborhood, Astoria will continue to reside within me and the work I do," he said.

Campaign Controversy

In his race for mayor, Mamdani connected his core platform – halting rent increases – to his circumstances as a tenant.

However his rivals, most notably former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for remaining in the affordable housing even though he came from a famous family.

A House Not Always Used

Some mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, preferred to remain in his private home on the Upper East Side throughout his tenure, which concluded in 2012.

Rather, Bloomberg argued it ought to be a place for official events, and championed significant upgrades of the older mansion.

A Grand New Home

When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion sometime around his inauguration on 1 January, he will find himself in an environment far removed from his modest Astoria digs.

With its pale yellow exterior, green shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure situated by the East River.

Within, the first floor of the historically styled mansion is appointed consistent with the home's early 19th-century origins.

The compound, which allegedly has several bedrooms, also boasts enhanced security to safeguard the mayor and his family.

Ghostly Tales

A number of people have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors would sometimes open and closed by themselves, and the floorboards creaked eerily.

Former Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "It doesn't matter what people claim," he declared in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."

The Value of Rent Stabilization

Mamdani's current apartment is rent-stabilized, meaning the city imposes caps on how much building managers can raise the rent each year.

New Yorkers view rent-stabilized housing as valuable lifelines as the cost of housing outpaces the average income.

Data indicated Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.

According to real estate analysts Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
