European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says
The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.
