British Designer Antony Price, Celebrated for Creating Looks for Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the visionary style architect responsible for many legendary styles associated with musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.
His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, such as the soft-colored suits that appeared in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's landmark music video for "the song Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement on social media."
This news arrives less than a month after he presented his newest line in London, his first in more than 30 years. The performer Lily Allen modelled a dress evoking the notorious black velvet "revenge dress" historically worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
An Enduring Influence
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price relocated to London at the start of the 1960s to enroll at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he commenced his career designing clothing for men at the company Stirling Copper and was behind the form-fitting, button-fly pants that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger famously wore during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.
He founded his own label in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show opened with looks from model Jerry Hall, who later wore the marriage dress Price designed for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A long-time collaborator of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to merge elements of men's and women's fashion along with his masterful technique in shaping form-fitting garments made him a "genuine original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
By the 1990s, he commenced designing outfits for Camilla, now Queen Consort, which included various looks for her US tour after becoming Duchess.
Following a profession lasting over fifty years, Price staged what would be his last show in London recently in conjunction with the design house 16Arlington.
